The 1960s Civil Rights Movement Documentary (Zoom event) Online
Using documentary clips as a starting point, this event examines Black liberation as a historical struggle, tracing how the contradictions of American democracy demanded resistance rather than patience. Beginning with the 1955 lynching of Emmett Louis Till, the program moves to Rosa Parks’s refusal to surrender her seat, igniting mass resistance. Under Martin Luther King Jr., nonviolent struggle emerged as a collective strategy, even as it was met with violence, while figures such as Malcolm X articulated a radical call for Black self-determination, dignity, and freedom.
