Hip Hop and Spoken Word Therapy in School Counseling Praxis (Hybrid Event)

Hip Hop and Spoken Word Therapy in School Counseling Praxis (Hybrid Event) In-Person / Online

Join us for a talk with Dr. Ian Levy where he will describe a need for culturally sustaining forms of school counseling in research and practice to illustrate how Hip-Hop culture can be effectively integrated into comprehensive school counseling. Detailing the theoretical development, practical implementation, and empirical evaluation of a holistic approach to school counseling dubbed "Hip Hop and Spoken Word Therapy" (HHSWT), this talk will articulate how hip-hop based practices such as lyric writing, performing in cyphers, producing mixtapes, and constructing school studios offer an effective means of transcending White, western approaches to counseling. This talk foregrounds the needs of racially diverse, marginalized youth, whilst also addressing the role and positioning of the school counselor in using HHSWT within their comprehensive program to revolutionize education.

Dr. Ian Levy is an Associate Professor of School Counseling, and Chairperson of the department of Counseling and Therapy at Manhattan College.
